new malki variants

The 3-player vs the 4th color mode
(advanced cooperative play, by maxim & friends)

This variant is played with 3 and is actually a cooperative game ! It goes as follows,
- each plays with 1 color, but they all play as allies, so they don't fight each other
- instead, they play against the 4th color (white)
- the order of the clock is played, but only for the 3 colors fighting white
- white plays every next turn (by the 3 players, in turn)
It turned out to be extremely difficult, so Maxim & his friends had to limit the options of white and did so by adding a rule: if the white King can move forward, then he must.
It suffices for the alliance to have one King to conquer the center of the board to win the game. If white wins they all lose the game.
All game rules remain unchanged.

the so-called simplified 2-player advanced play variant revisited (by martijn & nicolas)

We already mentioned this variant of Malki in our blog post MALKI BY YOU. At the time we believed it to be a simplified variation on the advanced play for 2, 3 or 4 players. Were we wrong !
Indeed, having to move only one piece out of the two colors makes it somehow easier, or even slower (Martijn & Nicolas play it with colors opposite to each other), but considered from the perspective of complexity the Malki game becomes even more challenging. For following reasons,
- the colors are not tied to a fixed chronology (order of the clock)
- each player is not limited to playing with a particular color, but has two colors to choose from each turn (and thus has twice as many options)
All Malki game rules remain unchanged.

Thanks for those mind-mazing variants & insights! Two variants that we will try out soon...

Hi Martijn,
Playing the « simplified two-player advanced play variant » was pretty cool! Sven and I played it and we were quite impressed by the emerging dynamics, that differ from the « advanced play for two players ».
Indeed, at the start the game looks somehow slower, but it actually isn’t.
The interaction between two colors (of the same player) is less present maybe, but is not entirely absent, for sure. This variant definitely needed another way of thinking. Awesome!
The huge advantage of this version was to be found in the endgame, where it is no longer game over for the player that loses a King (and its color), as he does not lose a turn with that King.
Cheers,
Luc
